The Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority has invited mini-grid developers to express interest in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Bulimeni solar photovoltaic-battery mini-grids project.
The Africa Minigrids Program (AMP) Eswatini project is one of 21 AMP projects currently being implemented in an equal number of African countries. ESERA will part-fund the development through a grant from the Global Environment Facility. The closing date for applications is August 23.
The AMP Eswatini project is part of a broader initiative to support renewable energy mini-grid development across Africa. It aligns with Eswatini''s National Energy Policy (2018) and the Kingdom of Eswatini Energy Masterplan, 2034, aiming for universal energy access through renewable sources.
The Project is a stand-alone mini-grid which consists of a centralised 35kW solar PV generation plant complete with 200kWh battery storages system and an AC LV reticulation network designed to service about 26 rural homesteads through an advanced smart metering system for billing.
Eswatini has released multiple solar pv tenders over the years without any result. This is largely because the treasury does not offer sovereign debt cover in the event of the off-taker, the Eswatini Electricity Company, defaulting on a power purchase agreement.
The Sigcineni Off-Grid Solution project began as a small-scale off-grid pilot study into the use of solar technology to meet rural electrification objectives, especially as some rural communities are far from the national grid
The country has a Mini-grid and off-grid Regulatory Framework. Its scope is comprehensive, covering a range of topics that can help to reduce the risks to developers and facilitate investment in renewable energy mini-grids.
This project presents a significant opportunity for developers to contribute to Eswatini''s renewable energy goals and support the local community''s energy needs through innovative and sustainable solutions.

Eswatini has launched a tender to develop a solar minigrid project to electrify the Bulimeni community, which includes 92 households in the Shiselweni region of southern Eswatini. The tender invites private minigrid developers to design, construct, operate, and maintain the Bulimeni Solar PV-Battery minigrid project for a 20-year operation period.
