Microgrid operation This subsection conducts a comprehensive literature review of the main control strategies proposed for microgrid operation with the aim to outline the minimum core-control functions to be implemented in the SCADA/EMS so as to achieve good levels of robustness, resilience and security in all operating states and transitions.
In the islanded mode operation of a microgrid, a part of the distributed network becomes electrically separated from the main grid, while loads are supported by local DERs. Such DERs are typically power electronic based, making the full system complex to study.
However, a microgrid operating in autonomous mode will only operate when voltage and frequency stabilization condition is met. To achieve the required control, a droop control or hierarchical control is employed. Subsequent sections discuss different architectures of microgrid and relevant control strategies.
