An important dataset for modelling the Brazilian energy system is published in the context of Brazil’s National Ten-Year Expansion Plan 6. It contains the input data for the corresponding investment model 7. However, modellers, who would like to use this dataset, must have Portuguese language skills and modelling experience.
The national data from the Brazilian Energy Review come, for the most part, from the compilations that the Energy Research Company – EPE carries out to construct the Brazilian Energy Balance. Various sector agents participate in these works, such as ANP, ANEEL, ANM, ONS, CCEE, Petrobras and Eletrobras.
The purpose of the BEB is to present the accounting for the supply and consumption of energy in Brazil, covering the activities of extraction of primary energy resources, their conversion into secondary forms, import and export, distribution and end use of energy.
Brazil's energy mix is diverse; hydropower, fossil fuels, biofuels, wind energy, and solar power all make significant contributions (Table 1). Brazil's total energy production increased by an average annual growth rate of 1.5% from 2011 to 2021.
In Brazil, the industrial and transportation sectors use most of the energy. Crude oil and other petroleum liquids production contributes significantly to Brazil's total energy production, accounting for 54.0% of total energy production and 44.2% of total energy consumption in 2021 (Table 1).
