Fenaka, in partnership with the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, has officially launched the Magey Solar program, an ambitious initiative aimed at harnessing solar energy by installing photovoltaic (PV) systems on the rooftops of private homes across the Maldives.
It is one of several outputs from the solar resource mapping component of the activity Energy Resource Mapping and Geospatial Planning Maldives [Project ID: P146018]. This activity is funded and supported by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), a multi-donor trust fund
Investing in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, ocean current and wave energy can help make the Maldivian economy more resilient by creating higher-value financial and business opportunities.
Project Summary: The project involves the development of a 36-megawatt (MW) solar power project and 50 megawatt hours (MWh) of battery energy storage solutions across various selected islands in the Maldives.
This report identifies a long and short lists of potential solar measuring sites in Maldives and proposes set of instruments to be deployed and operated at the agreed meteorological sites. This report also ranks the sites,
The inauguration of the 5 MW solar project on December 7, 2022 under the ASPIRE project has been a game changer in the energy transition journey of the Maldives . This journey, which started in 2014, is now seeing unprecedented interest from international investors and helping establish the Maldives as an investment destination for sustainable
I am pleased to present this solar resource overview of the Maldives, as a first publication in the series to provide accurate data on solar radiation in the Maldives. The report is aimed at reducing the gap in availability of systematic data. By the end of this project, we will be able to
In Maldives, four Tier 2 solar measuring stations will be installed on sites that are selected in the Site Selection Report, elaborated by Consultants and approved by the Government of Maldives and by the World

Maldives: Maldives Solar Power Development and Energy Storage Solution 2. Project Summary and Objectives Project Summary: The project involves the development of a 36-megawatt (MW) solar power project and 50 megawatt hours (MWh) of battery energy storage solutions across various selected islands in the Maldives.
In 2014, the first 1.5 MW solar project under ASPIRE only had four investors bids, and resulted in a high power purchase price (PPA) of 21 US cents per unit of electricity, indicating a lack of interest from investors in investing in sustainable projects in the Maldives.
There are two main types of solar energy technologies: photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP). Photovoltaics have high potential in Maldives, and this technology is discussed in this Chapter. CSP technology is not expected to be implemented in Maldives.
In 2022, 63 investor expressed interest in the third 11 MW solar project in the remote islands of Maldives, and a record low price of 9.8 US cents was received. This is one of the lowest tariffs for any small island developing state (SIDS).
Solar power plants exploit local solar resources; they do not require heavy support infrastructure, they are scalable, and improve electricity services. A key feature of solar electricity is that it is accessible in remote locations, thus providing development opportunities anywhere. Access to electricity in Maldives is nearly universal.
It has been communicated by all publications that Maldives has considerable potential for solar power generation. The previously developed solar and meteorological data sets (See Chapter 1.1) do not fulfil the requirements for accuracy and reliability needed for commercial development of present times.
