New battery energy storage systems (BESS) could be the solution to constraints in power grids across Europe while also offering an opportunity for investors. With 40% of Europe''s power distribution grids over 40 years old, capacity is increasingly constrained.
A key technology in managing this gap between generation and demand are Battery Energy Storage Sites (BESS). These can charge from the grid when there''s an abundance of renewable electricity during peak generation periods and then discharge back onto the grid when there''s a shortfall in supply.
Grid-scale battery storage in particular needs to grow significantly. In the Net Zero Scenario, installed grid-scale battery storage capacity expands 35-fold between 2022 and 2030 to nearly 970 GW. Around 170 GW of capacity is added in 2030 alone, up from 11 GW in 2022.

We recently installed these two Tesla Powerwall 2 Battery Storage systems for a customer in St Martins. This was installed as part of a project for them installing Solar PV and an EV Charging Point. Located in Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark or Herm
Image: Solar Media. So far, battery storage sites have been installed throughout all regions of the UK, with the South East region having the largest operational capacity and an even larger proportion of the total planned capacity; therefore, it is not surprising to see the South East region dominating the capacity in the 2021 site prospects.
All data is taken from our UK Battery Storage Project Database report. Currently, the total operational capacity for battery storage in the UK is 1.3GW with 130MW having been commissioned already this year. The graphic below shows a flow diagram that summarises the remaining 2021 site prospects, within the total pipeline of 686 sites.
In its draft national electricity plan, released in September 2022, India has included ambitious targets for the development of battery energy storage. In March 2023, the European Commission published a series of recommendations on policy actions to support greater deployment of electricity storage in the European Union.
