Singapore-based Sun Cable is seeking to develop a giant solar PV and battery energy storage complex on a 12,000-hectare site in the Northern Territory’s (NT) Barkly region. The project includes a 17-20 GW solar farm and between 36 GWh and 42 GWh of energy storage.
The idea of transporting solar energy by undersea cable is a relatively new twist on an old idea. The use of submarine cables for transporting renewable energy is commonplace, partly by virtue of the offshore wind industry. Long undersea cables are also commonplace and they are getting longer, especially in the field of data transmission.
The project will be able to store 36-42 GW hours of energy storage. An 800 km High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) overhead transmission line will connect the solar precinct to Murrumujuk, northeast of Darwin. Murrumujuk will serve as the project’s converter site, which includes the terminal location for the transmission line.
The capacity of the battery energy storage system has also been boosted, from the initial 20 GWh to between 36 and 42 GWh of storage.
