As the use of Li-ion batteries is spreading, incidents in large energy storage systems (stationary storage containers, etc.) or in large-scale cell and battery storages (warehouses, recyclers, etc.), often leading to fire, are
The container has built-in batteries, EMS, PCS, STS, transformer, air conditioner, fire extinguishing devices and other equipment. Customers can choose containers of different capacity to meet the required application scenarios. The
On April 19, 2019, one male career Fire Captain, one male career Fire Engineer, and two male career Firefighters received serious injuries as a result of cascading thermal runaway within a
examining a case involving a major explosion and fire at an energy storage facility in Arizona in April 2019, in which two first responders were seriously injured. According to an article
The variation of heat release rate during a fire in an energy storage container can be classified into three distinct stages over time, including the spread stage, full
An energy storage system (ESS) is pretty much what its name implies—a system that stores energy for later use. The primary risk with BESSs is battery case damage or overheating of the system from an internal

The primary risk with BESSs is battery case damage or overheating of the system from an internal fault or externally from exposure to fire. If the risk scenario comes to fruition, the hazard side of the failure

In 2019, EPRI began the Battery Energy Storage Fire Prevention and Mitigation – Phase I research project, convened a group of experts, and conducted a series of energy storage site surveys and industry workshops to identify critical research and development (R&D) needs regarding battery safety.
Unfortunately, there have been a large number of energy storage battery fires in the past few years. For example, in South Korea, which has by far the largest number of energy storage battery installations, there were 23 reported fires between August 2017 and December 2018 according to the Korea Joongang Daily (2019).
4. Planning for Failure Requires Choices: Varying Levels of Over the past four years, at least 30 large-scale battery energy storage sites (BESS) globally experienced failures that resulted in destructive fires.1 In total, more than 200 MWh were involved in the fires.
Stationary Energy Storage Failure Incidents – this table tracks utility-scale and commercial and industrial (C&I) failures. Other Storage Failure Incidents – this table tracks incidents that do not fit the criteria for the first table. This could include failures involving the manufacturing, transportation, storage, and recycling of energy storage.
For more information on energy storage safety, visit the Storage Safety Wiki Page. The BESS Failure Incident Database was initiated in 2021 as part of a wider suite of BESS safety research after the concentration of lithium ion BESS fires in South Korea and the Surprise, AZ, incident in the US.
As one of the site hosts indicated, there is no “silver bullet” to address battery energy storage fire and explosion hazards, but rather many solutions are needed. Though the risk of a fault in an ESS may be low, certain issues can never be truly eliminated, and the tolerance to such risk is up to the storage asset’s owner and operator.
