Increasing demands on the energy resources due to rapid industrialization and population growth has raised awareness in Saudi Arabia that decades of subsidized energy and profligate energy usage is no longer a viable option, neither as part of a national energy policy nor as part of its international environmental commitments.
In this study, dependence on fossil fuels (B13) is identified as the most critical sub-barrier because it plays a substantial role in KSA's energy and economy. Many countries, especially those with rich fossil fuel reserves, are struggling to switch from traditional energy sources to renewables.
New jobs in RE and job losses in existing industries could be problems as the KSA shifts from an oil-driven economy to one based on RE. The third highest-ranked sub-barrier was cultural and social norms (B74). RE should be acknowledged culturally in the KSA, where oil is a major economic and social factor.
UNDP plays a key role in assisting Saudi Arabia with the enabling activities necessary to undertake its commitment under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) through its Second National Communication (NSC) Programme.
First, the fuzzy AHP method was used to assess the weights of the main barriers and sub-barriers impeding the adoption of RE in the KSA.
