ESB officially opens its latest battery storage project in Co Cork

ESB has today opened its latest major battery plant at its Aghada site in Co Cork which will add 150MW (300MWh) of fast-acting energy storage to help provide grid stability and deliver more renewable power onto Ireland''s electricity system.

Battery Energy Storage

Battery energy storage therefore goes hand in hand with renewable energy generation and are a key part of ESB''s strategy. ESB is developing a pipeline of battery projects as well as other flexible enabling technologies to support our renewables strategy.

ESB launches 150MW/300MWh Irish BESS

Irish state-owned electricity company ESB has opened a 150MW/300MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Aghada site in Co Cork. The project is the latest step in ESB''s commitment to investing €300 million (£251 million) in battery storage technology.

Battery storage – a key pillar of enabling a net zero carbon

BESS and other forms of storage are a key pillar in Ireland''s future electricity system, together with renewables and the back-up generation that is currently provided by natural gas, and will be replaced by non-fossil fuels over time.

Battery Storage

ESB has shown its commitment to battery storage technology through active investment. We have over 300MWs of two-hour storage across five sites, enough to power around 200,000 homes. That represents an investment of €300million.
