EDP''s new floating solar project is in line with regulatory changes ongoing in Portugal, that open the door to the existence of photovoltaic solar auctions and hybridisation, the combination of several sources (renewable or fossil) at a single connection point to the electricity grid.
A floating solar farm of 12,000 solar panels will be ready to produce power in July of this year in Portugal''s Alqueva reservoir on the Guadiana River in Alentejo. This will be Europe''s largest floating solar park on a reservoir in Europe, the size of four football pitches.
Situated in the municipalities of Alenquer and Azambuja, the Cerca Photovoltaic Plant features an installed capacity of 202 MWp and over 310 thousand bifacial solar panels, capable of absorbing solar energy from both sides, thus maximizing its conversion into renewable electricity.
Located in the region of Alqueva, it is the largest floating solar park in Europe in a reservoir, and the second one built in Portugal, after EDP''s pilot project in Alto Rabagão; The energy generated by this plant, which has almost 12,000 photovoltaic panels, will supply more than 30% of the population in this region in the south of Portugal;

Two tugboats have moved a vast array of 12,000 solar panels, the size of four soccer pitches, to their mooring on Portugal''s Alqueva reservoir in preparation to start up Europe''s largest
In a bold announcement, Portugal recently surpassed its entire solar output from 2023 by September 2024, celebrating a record year for solar energy production. According to REN (Rede de Energia Nacional), the country generated more than 3.99 TWh of solar energy in just the first nine months, exceeding last year''s total of 3.6 TWh.

The Cerca photovoltaic plant begins operation, delivering the renewable capacity assigned to EDP Renewables in Portugal's first solar energy auction. The project has a 202 MWp capacity, sufficient to power nearly 100,000 households. EDP now owns 540 MWp of solar capacity in Portugal, a technology crucial for the country's energy transition.
This is our largest solar project in Europe, a source of energy Portugal should significantly harness to accelerate its energy transition. At EDP, we are looking at dozens of new solar projects that will make a significant contribution to this path," highlights Duarte Bello, EDP Renewables Chief Operating Officer for Europe & LatAm.
The project has a 202 MWp capacity, sufficient to power nearly 100,000 households. EDP now owns 540 MWp of solar capacity in Portugal, a technology crucial for the country's energy transition. This milestone was achieved with the commissioning of EDP Renewables' largest solar plant in Europe, located in the Lisbon district.
EDP Renewables has activated 202 MW of solar capacity in Portugal. The plant, in the district of Lisbon, was awarded to the company in the country’s inaugural solar energy auction. It is the company’s largest solar facility in Europe thus far.
In February, EDP Renewables commissioned Portugal’s second solar-wind hybrid project, after commissioning the country’s first at the start of last year.
From pv magazine Spain Portugal awarded 183 MW of renewables capacity in an auction for floating PV projects this week. Around 56% of the capacity was awarded under the contract-for-difference regime (103 MW), and the rest under the National Electricity System Compensation scheme (80 MW).
