This article profiles seven successful founders and entrepreneurs in the solar energy field as examples of the possibilities for women to set up organisations and have pioneering roles in the clean energy sector. All seven are founders or co-founders of either for-profit or non-profit organisations.
Key proposed actions to close the gender gap include targeted funding, access to networks, and supportive policies for gender equality. A growing number of women are looking at the solar energy sector as a source of well-paid employment with strong opportunities for career advancement.
On the one hand, this tells us that women are generally under-represented in the energy sector overall, but on the other, it shows that renewable energy, as a younger and more dynamic sector is an opportunity for change.
A report on this project by Khaemba (2020) indicates that women formed over 50% of beneficiaries in these projects that included a biogas plant from water hyacinth, a biotower from human waste, a solar mini-grid, a women clean energy cookstove project, solar water pump, solar lighting at a market, a windmill, and a solar hybrid water project.
Further, access to modern energy can decrease women’s social participation, for example, when cooking, entertainment and child-rearing move indoors 20. Overall, synergies between SDGs 5 and 7 appear to dominate over the trade-offs.
This is because energy access and energy poverty are highly gendered. As discussed above, gender and energy issues are only now gaining prominence having been mostly left out of discussions, and this trend should continue so as to realize gains toward SEforAll.
