Solar panels’ efficiency and performance determine a solar PV system’s effectiveness. A higher-efficiency panel will produce more power per unit area, meaning that fewer panels are needed to generate a given amount of electricity.
Mass installation of silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) panels exhibited a socioenvironmental threat to the biosphere, i.e., the electronic waste (e-waste) from PV panels that is projected to reach 78 million tonnes by the year 2050.
Many photovoltaic panels (PVs), have accumulated as a waste and even more PVs are nearing their End-of-Life (EoL). PV waste is considered a “hazardous material” due to the multitude of precious, heavy and toxic metals employed in their construction. Nowadays, PV waste is usually landfilled or incinerated.
After separation, there was a 30% increment in silver concentration. Moreover, the processing cost of this method is found to be around 0.0019 $/W, making it an economical solution for recycling PV panels. Zhao et al. (2020) performed a parametric investigation on a high-voltage pulse method to enrich PV panel waste.
Global growth of solar PV capacity [5, 6, , , ]. In 2017, the Asia-Pacific region became the leading area for solar power having increased its capacity by 73.7 GW to reach a total installed capacity of 221.3 GW [5, 6]. It represented a 55% share of the global capacity as visible in Fig. 3 .
There are no specific severity, occurrence, and detection tables developed only for the solar panel as it is the most critical component of a solar PV system and its performance determines a PV plant’s efficiency and performance. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an FMEA methodology to analyze solar panels.
