By 2030, the Government of Mozambique hope to transform this landscape, and achieve universal energy access by the end of the decade. This would require capacity to more than double to almost 6,500 MW. Solar is undeniably the most intuitive renewable technology when it comes to off-grid energy solutions.
Mozambique plans to move forward with solar power plants in at least five parts of the country by 2030, with an estimated capacity of 1,000 MegaWatts (MW) of electricity production, promising a "true solar revolution".
Solar energy was the fastest growing source of electricity in Mozambique in recent years (2017-2021), the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced today. Annual production grew from 1.5 to 69 gigawatts between 2017 and 2021, reads the bulletin of Basic Indicators of Energy, Gas and Oil.
Samir Salé, country and business development director of Globeleq, talks to The Energy Year about fast-tracking renewables projects in Mozambique and the potential of solar generation and battery storage in the country''s energy mix.
Mozambique''s renewable energy landscape is in its infancy, with 60 MW of installed solar capacity in 2022. However, the Mozambican government have a vision for the country, based on
Mozambique, situated in southeastern Africa, is fast emerging as a focal point for solar energy investments. With its abundant sunlight and a growing electricity demand, the country presents a promising market for renewable energy projects.
Thai Solar Energy Public Company Limited ("TSE") was established in 2008 by Thai national shareholders who together share a common goal of pushing the technological envelope for clean renewable energy, and harnessing it for the benefit of those communities that surrounds us.
Solar energy can benefit both household and commercial use in Mozambique. For households, solar-powered home systems can provide electricity to remote areas where the national grid is not available. This can improve access to electricity and quality of
Large scale renewable projects are becoming a point of interest for investment in Mozambique, specifically solar and hydro. Mozambique''s main body to promote renewable energy access, FUNAE, expects that the capacity of on-grid renewable energy from independent power producers (IPP) will increase to 575 MW by 2030.
In a new monthly column for pv magazine, SolarPower Europe describes how Mozambique may take full advantage of its huge solar potential by implementing its recently launched Renewable Energy Auctions Programme for large-scale projects, while also pushing for more off-grid renewables in remote areas.
It received funding from the European Union through the French Development Agency. In total, PROLER will procure 120 MW of solar and wind. Mozambique has not installed much solar so far, with installations standing at just 55MW by the end of 2021, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Mozambique ’s Energy Regulatory Authority (ARENE) has launched a tender to select independent power producers to develop, build, operate, and maintain two 30 MW solar plants. It will select developers to build the projects in Manje, the province of Tete, and Chimbunila, Niassa province. Bidders can apply to develop either or both projects.
The total estimated addressable market for off-grid solar is currently 173 MW, and is expected to grow in line with the growth of the aforementioned sectors. Recent energy policy reforms are also changing the game for off-grid renewables in Mozambique.
A solar plus storage project in Mozambique's Niassa province.
