Swiss battery maker Leclanche SA (SWX:LECN) and its Saint Kitts and Nevis government partners last week launched construction of a solar-plus-storage project in the Caribbean island nation.
Upon completion, the St. Kitts project will be the largest solar generation and energy storage system in the Caribbean and a model for other island nations worldwide. In its first year of operation, the system will generate approximately 61,300 MWh of electricity with a 41,500 metric ton reduction of CO 2 emissions.

SKELEC and Leclanché have already entered into a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) which ensures the system will supply essential power capacity for St. Kitts for many years to come. Leclanché has established a St. Kitts special purpose vehicle (SPV) along with local partner Solrid, to fund, own and operate the facility.
The solar PV will supply St. Kitts with 30 – 35% of the annual electricity demand utilising sustainable, solar energy with zero emissions. The solar and storage system will replace over 4,000,000 gallons of diesel per year.
One such example of this was the activation of the Sustainable Energy Storage System at the Sunset Reef Resort on March 19. This storage system is a Solid-State Supercapacitor that will store solar energy and create a battery energy storage system. This would allow the resort to operate solely on renewable energy.
