We do this to compare energy data across different metrics and sources. We will continue to update our data and charts with the latest global and country figures – typically on an annual basis.

This report includes cost data on power generation from natural gas, coal, nuclear, and a broad range of renewable technologies. For the first time, information on the costs of storage technologies, the long-term operation
The 2020 Cost and Performance Assessment provided installed costs for six energy storage technologies: lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, lead-acid batteries, vanadium redox flow batteries, pumped storage hydro, compressed-air energy storage, and hydrogen energy storage.
In this context, LCOS is an easily calculable while sufficiently detailed metric that enables a meaningful comparison of different storage technologies, as well as between storage and non-storage solutions, in energy
It found that the average capital expenditure (capex) required for a 4-hour duration Li-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) was higher at US$304 per kilowatt-hour than some thermal (US$232/kWh) and compressed air energy storage (US$293/kWh) technologies at 8-hour duration.

The average cost per unit of energy generated across the lifetime of a new power plant. This data is expressed in US dollars per kilowatt-hour. It is adjusted for inflation but does not account for differences in the cost of living between countries.
IRENA launched an electricity storage tool that enables users to undertake a rapid, but robust, analysis of the relative economic suitability of 13 different electricity storage technologies across 12 stationary storage applications.
Foundational to these efforts is the need to fully understand the current cost structure of energy storage technologies and identify the research and development opportunities that can impact further cost reductions.

examine the various technologies and compare their costs and performance on an equitable basis. As part of the Energy Storage Grand Challenge, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PN NL) is leading the development of a detailed cost and performance database for a variety of energy storage technologies

Renewable energy here is the sum of hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, modern biomass and wave and tidal energy. Traditional biomass – the burning of charcoal, crop waste, and other organic matter – is not included. This can be an important energy source in lower-income settings. Macao: How much of the country’s energy comes from nuclear power?
Traditional biomass – the burning of charcoal, crop waste, and other organic matter – is not included. This can be an important source in lower-income settings. Macao: How much of the country’s electricity comes from nuclear power? Nuclear power – alongside renewables – is a low-carbon source of electricity.
There exist a number of cost comparison sources for energy storage technologies For example, work performed for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory provides cost and performance characteristics for several different battery energy storage (BES) technologies (Mongird et al. 2019).
The cost estimates provided in the report are not intended to be exact numbers but reflect a representative cost based on ranges provided by various sources for the examined technologies. The analysis was done for energy storage systems (ESSs) across various power levels and energy-to-power ratios.
The cost categories used in the report extend across all energy storage technologies to allow ease of data comparison. Direct costs correspond to equipment capital and installation, while indirect costs include EPC fee and project development, which include permitting, preliminary engineering design, and the owner’s engineer and financing costs.
