Solar photovoltaic and wind turbines are dominating the market with a cumulative installed capacity of 2,412GW combined, and $422.5bn of new investment in 2023. but electrochemical storage remains the most prominent technology and battery energy storage (BES) in particular forms a large component of this. Battery energy storage systems: the
Electrical energy storage: Large-scale storage technologies for energy time-shifting, including grid-scale batteries [5], concentrated solar power [12] and power-to-gas (e.g. hydrogen [15] and synthetic natural gas [5]). Short-term, diurnal energy storage is often required in the regions with low seasonal variations in renewable energy

The new evidence comes from the fact that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a transaction advisory services mandate with Cambodia''s national utility company Électricité du Cambodge (EDC) to support the development of 2 GW of solar power in Cambodia.
“The battery energy storage system will showcase how large-scale deployment of innovative technology applications can be used to operate Cambodia’s grid in the future and generate more renewable power.”
The development of 2GW of solar capacity is part of the Cambodian government’s plan to meet growing energy demand by expediting the adoption of renewable energy and boosting energy efficiency. How well do you really know your competitors?
The mandate builds on ADB’s previous support for Cambodia’s solar sector, which included a 100MW National Solar Park located in Kampong Chhnang. Cambodia’s Power Development Masterplan also underlines its potential to increase its solar energy generation capacity, which is expected to exceed 3GW by 2040.
Key to this strategy will be harnessing Cambodia’s abundant solar resources, whose share in the installed capacity increased from practically nothing in 2016 to around 12% at the end of 2021. “This program will be Cambodia’s most ambitious yet in the renewable sector,” said Head of ADB’s Office of Public–Private Partnership F. Cleo Kawawaki.
Since 1994, ADB has awarded nearly $200 million in loans and grants to Cambodia’s energy sector and provided $6 million in technical assistance. ADB funding has focused on expanding transmission and distribution networks and support for sector reforms and institutional capacity building.
“The Grid Reinforcement Project, along with ADB’s ongoing assistance to Cambodia in power system planning, shows that adequate, reliable, and environmentally sustainable power supply can be provided at a reasonable cost to support equitable development,” said ADB Country Director for Cambodia Sunniya Durrani-Jamal.
