A giant new Tesla Megapack project with 300 MWh of energy capacity has come online in Australia to help stabilize the grid and make better use of renewable energy. Energy storage is currently the missing link in the renewable energy solution.
Tesla's website advertises the Megapack as being capable of "giga-scale projects," meaning that the Megapack can be used in developing grid-tied storage systems with over one Gigawatt-hour (GWh) of energy capacity: that's enough energy to power every home in San Francisco for six hours straight.
Using Megapack, Tesla can deploy an emissions-free 250 MW, 1 GWh power plant in less than three months on a three-acre footprint – four times faster than a traditional fossil fuel power plant of that size. Megapack can also be DC-connected directly to solar, creating seamless renewable energy plants.
To put the size of this project into perspective, Tesla deployed 9.4 GWh of energy storage in Q2 as a whole, its most in a single quarter, beating its previous record by 132 percent. Tesla Energy is no longer a sleeping giant. During the second quarter of 2024, Tesla Energy was able to deploy 9.4 GWh of energy storage products.
Tesla also says that its Lathrop, California “Megafactory,” which produces the Megapacks, can produce 10,000 units annually, equating to around 40 GWh of clean energy storage.
