June 20 (Reuters) - China's Gotion High Tech (002074.SZ) and Slovak partner InoBat will invest 1.2 billion euros ($1.29 billion) to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Slovakia, the country's Economy Minister Denisa Sakova said on Thursday.
According to a press release issued by the ministry, the planned investment in the construction of the plant amounts to 1.2 billion euros (1.28 billion U.S. dollars), making it the second-largest investment in Slovakia's history.
Minister Denisa Sakova said the plant's construction was key for the future of the car industry, which is a major driver for Slovakia's economy. The plant, in Surany, 93 km (58 miles) east of the capital Bratislava, will create up to 1,500 jobs, the ministry said.
The government and joint venture have now signed an Investment Agreement. The agreement does not come as a surprise. In November 2023, the companies signed a letter of intent to this effect with the Slovakian government regarding the factory. The partners had already presented the key points of the joint factory in September.
Of the total investment aid, 150 million euros (160.58 million U.S. dollars) will be provided as a subsidy, while an additional 64 million euros will be granted as income tax relief. This investment represents an important milestone for Slovakia, said Slovakia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Sako.
