The battery energy storage system (BESS) park in Vilvoorde, Belgium, one of the largest in Europe, will cover 3.5 hectares – about the size of 3.3 football fields. The site will accommodate 320 battery modules, measuring
Paris, May 15, 2023 – TotalEnergies has launched at its Antwerp refinery (Belgium), a battery farm project for energy storage with a power rating of 25 MW and capacity of 75 MWh, equivalent to the daily consumption of close to
This facility will have a storage capacity of 2,800 MWh of electricity. The park will make a significant contribution to the energy grid by providing stored renewable energy during periods of low solar and wind energy production — thereby reducing Belgium''s reliance on

Paris, May 15, 2023 – TotalEnergies has launched at its Antwerp refinery (Belgium), a battery farm project for energy storage with a power rating of 25 MW and capacity of 75 MWh, equivalent to the daily consumption of close to 10,000 households.
Sweco will design one of continental Europe''s largest battery parks, Green Turtle, for the energy storage company GIGA Storage Belgium. This facility will have a storage capacity of 2,800 MWh of electricity.
Belgian grid operator Elia announced the results of the nation''s 4th Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auction, selecting ENGIE''s 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Kallo. Scheduled to begin a 15-year capacity contract in November 2028, the lithium-ion battery farm will supply 400 MWh of energy for up to four hours
Green Turtle, situated on the Rotem industrial site in Belgium''s northwestern Limburg province, was originally planned as a 600 MW battery storage park for renewable energy. For technical optimization, client GIGA Storage Belgium opted to scale up to a capacity of 700MW. This corresponds to the average energy consumption of 385,000 households

The battery energy storage project is another step in Eneco''s investments in Belgium''s transition to a fully sustainable energy system. With 128 onshore wind turbines, participations in Belgium''s 2 largest offshore wind farms and nearly 400,000 solar panels, it is the largest green and the greenest major energy player in the country.

Once completed, the four-hour battery energy storage project will operate under a 15-year contract with Elia, Belgium’s electricity grid operator, and be located next to Engie’s gas power plant in Vilvoorde. From pv magazine ESS News site
Storing 800 MWh of energy across 3.5 hectares The battery energy storage system (BESS) park in Vilvoorde, Belgium, one of the largest in Europe, will cover 3.5 hectares – about the size of 3.3 football fields. The site will accommodate 320 battery modules, measuring 25 x 4 x 3 metres.
Europe's largest energy storage facility has begun operating in the Belgian province of Wallonia, as the continent aims to secure its energy supply. The 40 lithium-ion mega-batteries allow for stable energy distribution across the public grid even when wind or solar power inputs fluctuate.
Engie described this as “a double success within the CRM framework,” which ensures a future for its site in Belgium. The Vilvoorde BESS project will be launched in two phases, with the commissioning of 100 MW of batteries in September 2025, and a further 100 MW in January 2026.
This project, located on the Antwerp refinery site, will benefit from the available land and the site’s grid connection. It is a new step in TotalEnergies' development of battery energy storage systems (BESS) which strengthens the Company's presence across the entire electricity value chain in Belgium (production, storage, supply).
But sources like wind and solar are not always available, and the growing share of renewable energy generation can cause fluctuations in the electricity supply. Large-scale battery energy storage facilities are quickly becoming the essential link to absorb these imbalances and help support the electricity grid.
