Mauritania''s Solar Revolution: How a $289 Million Project Will Power Up the Country and Beyond A $289.5 million financing package from the African Development Bank and the Green Climate Fund will support two major projects that aim to develop solar power generation, transnational electricity interconnection and rural electrification in the country.
Chad: Merl Solar to supply 100 MWp from two solar power plants in Gaoui. Siemens Gamesa helps feed 250MW of wind energy to South Africa''s grid. The electricity sector in Mauritania is characterised by a fragmented electricity network, low electricity access rates, and an imbalance between supply and demand.
It involves the installation of hybrid mini photovoltaic power plants combining a photovoltaic park and a back-up electricity generator, and the construction of connecting lines to link the power plants to the villages, in the form of a public-private partnership (PPP).
It was one of the largest solar power installations in Africa when completed and is the first such utility-scale installation in the country. The Sheikh Zayed Solar Power Plant is a 15-megawatt
Solar power plants are systems that use solar energy to generate electricity. They can be classified into two main types: photovoltaic (PV) power plants and concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. Photovoltaic power plants convert sunlight directly into electricity using solar cells, while concentrated solar power plants use mirrors or lenses
The Sheikh Zayed Solar Power Plant is a 15-megawatt photovoltaic facility in Nouakchott, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. It was one of the largest solar power installations in Africa when completed and is the first such utility-scale installation in the country.
The project will extend distribution networks between the two countries, with almost 1,500 km of high-voltage wires deployed to provide power to 620,000 people while fostering long-term growth in the region. It additionally incorporates the construction of several solar power stations, and is set to increase solar capacity by 100 MW.

It was one of the largest solar power installations in Africa when completed and is the first such utility-scale installation in the country. The Sheikh Zayed Solar Power Plant is a 15-megawatt photovoltaic facility in Nouakchott, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
The facility is responsible for 10% of Mauritania’s grid capacity. It generates 25,409 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity per year and displaces approximately 21,225 tons of CO2. The plant’s almost 30,000 solar panels, manufactured by Masdar PV, provide electricity to more than 10,000 houses in Nouakchott.
The findings of this study indicate that a significant portion of Mauritania’s land area is highly suitable for solar PV and wind development.
The land utilisation factor for project develop-ment has been set to 1%, which translates into a drop in development potential to approximately 457.9 GW and 47 GW for solar PV and wind projects. The sustainable development of Mauritania’s high-quality wind and solar resources could serve as a catalyst for the country to achieve its vision of strong and inclusive economic growth, according to a new IEA report published today.
In line with the post-RRA process, Mauritania’s Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines requested IRENA’s support in May 2019 to undertake a suitability assessment to map potential areas for utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind projects.
This dataset has been extensively validated using in situ information from 3 134 stations around the world. As such, the accuracy of the land cover classification is approximately 62.6% (Bontempts et. al, 2011). Figure 8 shows the land cover for Mauritania. Figure 8.
