Taiwan Power Company announced today that TECO Group has won the bid for the Longtan ultra-high voltage (UHV) substation energy storage system at NT$2.6 billion. According to TECO Chairman Sophia Chiu, the Longtan UHV substation energy storage system is a major national construction project.
The private-sector power producer will set up standalone, grid-connected battery energy storage projects with an aggregate capacity of 1 GWh on a build-own-operate-transfer basis. The projects will be located in the Indian State of Rajasthan.
The tariff quoted in the auction was 58.43% lower than the ₹1.08 million (~$13,045)/MW/month quoted by JSW Energy for the Solar Energy Corporation of India’s auction to set up 500 MW/1,000 MWh BESS projects in August 2022.
The projects must be completed within 18 months from the effective date of the battery energy storage purchase agreement (BESPA). The power rating of the project capacity of 500 MWh (250 MW x 2 hours) BESS will be 250 MW, i.e., the maximum value of the active output and input power at the delivery point.
“The winning bid translates into unit storage charges of $58/MWh on a single cycle per day basis, a remarkable feat in view of the storage charges discovered in another recent energy storage procurement tender based on battery energy storage systems by SECI ($120/MWh),” said Greenko.
The tender outcome establishes pumped storage technology as the preferred and lowest-cost long-duration energy storage solution. Other developers submitted bids for Li-ion batteries, Na-S batteries, and compressed-air storage technologies.
