The World Bank Group, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, and the Government of Uzbekistan have signed a financial package to fund a 250-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant with a 63-MW battery energy storage system.
Through a development and cooperation agreement with Uzbekistan''s Ministry of Energy, the aim of the two projects is to develop large-scale solar photovoltaic ("PV") plants and battery energy
Saudi energy company Acwa Power and Japan''s Sumitomo Corporation will jointly develop renewable energy projects worth $4.2 billion in Uzbekistan. The first set of projects include Sazagan 1 and 2 in Samarkand, each consisting of a 500 megawatt (MW) solar PV plant and 334MW battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The agreement also aligns with our growing Uzbekistan portfolio, which includes wind power plants in multiple regions and the country''s first green hydrogen plant that will produce 3,000 metric tons of green hydrogen per year.
ACWA Power has five ongoing projects in Uzbekistan, including four wind projects and a combined gas cycle turbine facility. Uzbekistan is the second largest in terms of value for the company after its home market of Saudi Arabia.

ACWA Power and Sumitomo Corporation sign joint agreement to develop Uzbekistan''s largest renewable energy projects The Samarkand and Kungrad projects are one of the largest solar PV, battery storage and wind projects in the country
With a total investment of $4.2bn, the projects promise to transform Uzbekistan''s energy landscape by harnessing solar and wind power, alongside advanced battery storage systems.
Uzbekistan has abundant renewable energy potential, most of which lies in solar energy thanks to high solar irradiation. However, until now energy supply has been dominated by fossil fuels, with renewable energy – almost exclusively hydropower – accounting for only 1% of its total energy production in 2019.
We are deeply committed to excellence in all our endeavors.
