Where is Christmas Island?
The Territory of Christmas Island is located in the Indian Ocean approximately 2,800 kilometres west of Darwin, 2,600 kilometres north-west of Perth and 500 kilometres south of Jakarta (Map 1) (Director of National Parks 2002). The island covers an area of approximately 135 square kilometres and has 73 kilometres of coastline.
Is Christmas Island a cyclone prone location?
While Christmas Island is not officially considered to be a cyclone prone location (AECOM 2010) projections suggest there will be fewer cyclones overall, but predict an increase in the frequency of high intensity cyclones. This may result in canopy loss and tree fall. Canopy gaps can take up to 10 years to close.
