Australia-headquartered flow battery manufacturer Redflow is continuing with a strategy of selling devices into the telecoms sector, agreeing a second deal to repower mobile phone towers for a South African provider.
Redflow aims to launch a large MWh-scale version of its battery based on its existing stack design, known as X10, and has been working to secure financing to support the plan. After "significant commercial interest" in the solution, it proposed to build a new factory to make those batteries in Queensland.

Redflow has an established market for its zinc-bromine flow batteries in South Africa, which are already used by customers in manufacturing, such as Bosco Printed Circuits in Johannesburg, and local government, such as Mossel Bay Municipality in Southern Cape, as well as at residential sites.
Specialized Solar Systems Managing Director Peter Bergs said Redflow’s zinc-bromine flow batteries were ideally suited to provide energy storage for mobile phone towers, often located in remote locations.
The project will see Redflow’s zinc-bromine flow batteries provide energy storage for the mobile phone towers, operated by one of South Africa’s leading telcos. The towers will be owned by a local company, supported by the South African Government’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) affirmative action agenda.
Redflow batteries use a zinc bromine solution that flows between two tanks. When the battery charges, zinc is extracted from the liquid and stored separately on plates (plating). During discharge, the zinc goes back into the liquid (deplating). Redflow’s technology involves this process, and we have more information on how flow batteries work here.
The cost of a Redflow battery has been a point of interest, with the company facing challenges in this area. The last known price for a ZCell battery (as of 2018) was approximately $12,600, excluding the cost of an inverter and installation.
