The Desert Sunlight Solar Farm is a 550 megawatt (MW AC) photovoltaic power station approximately six miles north of Desert Center, California, in the Mojave Desert. It uses approximately 8.8 million cadmium telluride modules made by the US thin-film manufacturer First Solar.
Desert Sunlight is one of the largest completed PV solar projects in the world. It represents a major milestone in scaling up solar technology and uses First Solar’s commercially-available Series 3 thin-film cadmium-telluride solar modules. The project created 550 construction jobs and is expected to support 15 permanent jobs.
At project completion, 8.9 million solar modules will have been installed at Desert Sunlight. The project is expected to generate 1,060,000 megawatt-hours of clean energy per year while preventing 614,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. It also used approximately 70,000 metric tons of American steel.
There are also plans to build other large solar plants in the Mojave Desert. US annual average solar energy received by a latitude tilt photovoltaic cell (modeled). The Southwestern United States is one of the world's best areas for insolation, and the Mojave Desert receives up to twice the sunlight received in other regions of the country.
The planned solar power project near Dalat, China, is one of the flagships of China's green energy transition. China, which still generates most of its electricity from coal, wants to reduce its consumption of fossil fuels and expand capacity for power generation from renewable sources such as wind and solar. The project is a significant initiative in this regard.
The newly approved Arica and Victory Pass solar farms are the first projects to be greenlighted under the desert plan. Haaland told The Times that she sees the plan as a model for other Western states as more solar and wind facilities are proposed for public lands. “It really does take a hard look at conservation,” she said.
