LITTLETON, Colorado, Feb 29 (Reuters) - Latin America is on the cusp of a critical developmental phase for its solar power generation sector that could see it leapfrog Southern Asia and North America to become the world's second largest hub for solar generation behind eastern Asia.
Given this increase in investment, new solar plants have been installed in several South American countries, with Chile being the country with the largest number of plants installed. This growth in solar photovoltaic participation in the electricity market poses new challenges as regulations must be modified to include these new energies.
To counterbalance this, some countries offer small to medium-sized grid-tied distributed generation to household and commercial users, subject to a nonselling excess power utility contract; however, a solar panel system is still relatively unaffordable to most Latin American households (Ferroukhi et al. 2016 ).
