The grid-connected 150 kW solar installation on Kiritimati Island (also known as Christmas Island) covers an area of 2,100 m 2 and will generate 280,000 kWh of clean, green electricity each year, while
ADB''s first in Kiribati''s energy sector, will finance climate-resilient solar photovoltaic generation, a battery energy storage system, and support institutional capacity building including will the development of n inclusivea and gender-sensitive renewable energy enabling environment and addressing barriers to private sector investment.
The three main components of a solar power system are: Solar panels (photovoltaic modules): These are the system''s heart. Solar panels contain photovoltaic cells that capture sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. They are typically mounted on rooftops or in open areas for maximum sunlight exposure.

Through the installation of solar-powered water farms, the foundation is not only addressing water insecurity but also empowering local women and youth to lead the way in climate resilience. The Solar Water Farm and Distillation System is a modular, all in one solution providing purified, distilled water from any water source including seawater
The versatility of the solar water farms, which can distill water from multiple sources and be expanded with additional solar panels, ensures that communities are no longer solely reliant on erratic rainfall or increasingly salinized groundwater.
Solar energy in Kiribati is used mostly in the form of solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies for the provision of lighting and electricity. This study examines the role of PV technologies in the sustainable development process in Kiribati, with particular reference to remote atoll communities.
Since 1991, the state-owned Kiribati Solar Energy Company (KSEC) has distributed approximately 4,400 home solar systems across 21 of the country''s 33 islands and received millions of dollars in development assistance from Japan and then the European Union, according to Tavita Airam, the company''s chief executive.
The Kiribati Grid Connected Solar PV Project, funded through the World Bank by the Australian Government and the Global Environment Facility, which will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from diesel fuel used for electricity, saw the unveiling today of 548kW of solar installations by representatives from the Government of Kiribati
