Vietnam has recently experienced a tremendous solar photovoltaic (PV) boom, marking the beginning of the country’s biggest and most swift energy transition. In 2021, Vietnam’s solar energy capacity was roughly 16.6 thousand megawatts, which is hardly compared to the previous year.
The country has hit a record high by doubling rooftop solar capacity to 378 megawatts (MW) by the end of December 2020, up from 378 MW in 2019. According to the IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics 2021, Vietnam’s installed solar PV capacity in 2020 was estimated as 16,504 MW, up from 4,898 MW in 2019.
The project started commercial operation and began delivering power to EVN. In addition, in the central Ninh Thuan Province, the epicenter of Vietnam’s solar energy boom, the Trung Nam Group, a Vietnamese conglomerate, has also constructed a solar farm, one of the largest in Southeast Asia.
Currently, the largest solar project in Vietnam, and indeed Southeast Asia, is the 600MW Dau Tieng Solar Power Complex, located in Tay Ninh Province, 100km away from Ho Chi Minh City. The project started commercial operation and began delivering power to EVN.
Vietnam’s total technical potential for solar power is up to 1,646GW (1,569GW is the ground potential and 77GW is the water potential). The total scale potential for the development of large-scale solar power nationwide is approximately 386 GW.
Investments such as in solar energy skyrocketed in just the span of five years. As a result, according to the most recent data, Vietnam now has 16.5 GW of solar power. Furthermore, some standards and guidelines must be followed when investing in renewable energy in Vietnam.
