Energy trade includes all commodities in Chapter 27 of the Harmonised System (HS). Capacity utilisation is calculated as annual generation divided by year-end capacity x 8,760h/year. Avoided emissions from renewable power is calculated as renewable generation divided by fossil fuel generation multiplied by reported emissions from the power sector.
The energy mix of North Macedonia is dominated by fossil fuels, with electricity production driving the country’s GHG emissions.
Solar power potential The solar potential of North Macedonia is clearly the most prominent clean energy resource in the country.
Nevertheless, for the time being, there is no visible resistance and wind potential remains. Just as with any future exploitation of renewable energy, wind power projects can be a good opportunity for citizen participation and creation of energy communities in North Macedonia.
The electric power production system in North Macedonia consists of two coal power plants with a total installed capacity of 825 megawatts (MW), several hydro power plants with a total installed capacity of 695 MW, one combined generation power plant, a heavy oil plant, a few solar power plants, a few biogas plants, and one wind power farm.
The Ministry of Economy of North Macedonia announced earlier in 2020 that “the (energy) strategy envisions investments in photovoltaic power plants which are expected to have a total installed capacity of 1.357 MW, or 41.8% of the total installed capacity for energy production.”41 36 European Commission.
For small-scale investments, the market remains a battlefield where larger energy players are bound to win. The fact that North Macedonia, within a very short period, got on the way of securing over 135MW of installed capacity for solar power should be celebrated.
