Last year, the Moroccan government and China's Gotion agreed to look into setting up an electric vehicle battery plant in the kingdom with up to $6.3 billion in eventual investment. Industry minister Ryad Mezzour told Reuters last month the Gotion project was advancing with discussions on the footprint and location.
The investment is the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East and represents Morocco’s push to be a leader in EV battery manufacturing. The gigafactory will create around 17,000 direct and indirect jobs, including 2,300 highly skilled positions.
The planned annual production is 70 GWh. That should be enough for more than one million electric vehicles. Production is mainly for export to meet the high demand in Europe and America – but the partners do not name potential customers. The investment volume is about 20 billion Moroccan dirhams (1.8 billion euros).
RABAT, May 15 (Reuters) - Chinese auto battery manufacturers Hailiang and Shinzoom will set up two separate plants in Morocco, as the country seeks to adapt its growing automotive sector to increasing demand for electric vehicles, Moroccan officials said on Tuesday.
The plant will also include recycling facilities. The companies are planning with annual capacities of 120,000 tonnes for NCM precursors, 60,000 tonnes for LFP precursors and 30,000 tonnes for the recycling of battery materials in the first phase. The planned annual production is 70 GWh.
The Mont Tropic underwater lithium deposit, located near the border with Mauritania and the Canary Islands, is believed to be one of the largest strategic mineral reserves in Africa. Exploiting it would require mining groups prepared to take high geopolitical and environmental risks, even if these would necessarily be shared with Moroccan groups.
